Origin and Significance

Lebaran Ketupat is closely associated with one of the Nine Saints of Islam in Java, Sunan Kalijaga, who is believed to have introduced ketupat to the Javanese population. This tradition emerged during the era of the Nine Saints (Wali Songo) by incorporating the existing “slametan” custom to impart Islamic teachings of gratitude to Allah, charity, and fostering familial ties on Eid al-Fitr.

• Meaning of “Ketupat”: The Javanese word “ngaku lepat” translates to “acknowledging mistakes.” Ketupat symbolizes mutual acknowledgment of faults, forgiveness, and starting anew by partaking in this traditional dish.

• Symbolic Attributes: The diamond-shaped package made from yellow coconut leaves signifies protection for Javanese people, while the four sides represent the principle of “kiblat papat lima pancer,” symbolizing that humans will always return to Allah, no matter where they go.

• Interpretation of Weaving Complexity: Some view the intricate weaving of ketupat’s casing as a reflection of the diverse mistakes humans make.

• Purity and Prosperity: The white rice inside the ketupat, symbolizing purity, is believed to represent cleanliness and sanctity after seeking forgiveness for past wrongdoings. It is also seen as a symbol of prosperity post-Idul Fitri.
